AROUND THE MUSEUM – A GUIDED TOUR What there is to see Our acclaimed audiovisual presentation tells the story of the people who have made this challenging environment their home, from the first settlers after the ice age to the present day. The commentary is available in six European languages, as are the permanent displays. Can you identify the birds and animals in our wildlife sound track, as it moves from the rockpools on the shoreline up to the rocky ledges of the mountain-tops? Our Natural History gallery portrays the local environment and wildlife in sound and pictures. The people who sailed away The most famous ship to sail from Lochbroom was the “Hector”, which left in 1773, the first ship to carry emigrants direct from Scotland to Nova Scotia in Canada. Visitors from all over the world come to carry out research in our Emigration corner. What there is to do Admire our famous tapestries and quilts, crafted by local people to celebrate Ullapool’s Bicentenary in 1988. Listen to them telling the story of the panels on our inphone system. Catch a glimpse of some of Lochbroom’s earliest settlers and find out how they made a life in this remote and hostile environment. How to keep the children happy! Lesson in progress! Pay attention while the teacher explains about schooldays of the past. Most children make a bee-line for the schoolroom, where they are fascinated to see the old writing slates, the dreaded ‘strap’ and listen to the teacher and pupils describing school days of the past. We have quizzes based upon the Museum’s themes. Younger children will enjoy taking a ‘rubbing’ of the Crown Brand herring barrel top. Archives and photographs We have an extensive archive of local reference material. A full index is available. Our photograph archive holds 1,400 photographs of local interest. We offer a photograph copying service.
