About this objectPenola Anchored at Isle Martin with people walking to It. Penola sunk in the Clyde during WW2. Source: Camera Recalls 61. 3 masted schoner Penola anchored at Isle Martin. The schooner was owned by commander Vyner, landowner of Isle Martin. A flour mill existed on the island until the late 1940s. The wheat for the mill was shipped in from Liverpool on the schooner. The flour was then distributed to bakeries throughout the North of Scotland. Previous to her role as a goods ship, the Penola was an Antarctic expedition ship for the British Graham Land expedition in the mid-1930s.
